ROLAND VSR-880 TURBO FACTS
The Roland VSR-880 is an 8-track digital hard disk recorder that provides
Roland’s V-Studio technology in a 2 space, rackmount unit.
The VSR-880 features:
  • 8 24-bit A/D, 8 D/A converters
  • 8-Track, 24-bit VSR Recording Mode
  • R-BUS port for connection to select Roland V-Mixers and R-Bus compatible accessories
  • Dual 24-bit stereo effects with optional VS8F-2 Expansion Board
  • New mastering feature for simultaneous mixdown and creation of storable CD image files

Getting Around the VSR—880

Below is a summary of the main VSR-880 controls:

SELECT Buttons: Used to access functions or edit menus. Functions are labeled in WHITE letters above the button and edit menus are labeled in BLUE letters below the button:

  • To choose the function labeled in WHITE, press the SELECT button one time.
  • To choose the edit menu labeled in BLUE, hold down the SHIFT button and then press the SELECT button.

LEFT PARAMETER Button: Moves backward through a menu’s edit pages.

RIGHT PARAMETER Button: Advances forward through a menu’s edit pages.

PLAY/DISPLAY Button: Exits an edit menu and returns you to the main Play screen.

TIME/VALUE Dial: Turning to the left or right adjusts the parameter or value of an edit menu.

ENT/YES Button: Pressing this accepts or confirms a menu choice (Example: SelectSong Sure?):

EXIT/NO Button: Pressing this cancels a function or declines a menu choice.

Loading a Song

Use the following procedure to load the demo song "Spiderweb:"

  1. Hold SHIFT and press SONG.
  2. Press PARAMETER/SONG until "SNG Song Select?" appears, then press ENT/YES.
  3. Use the TIME/VALUE dial to select "SNG Sel=SPIDERWEB," and press ENT/YES twice.
  4. At "SNG STORE Current" press EXIT/NO. The VSR will load the demo song "Spiderweb."
Listening to a Song

Use the following procedure to listen to different versions of the demo song "Spiderweb:"

  1. Press SCENE, then STATUS [1] to load Scene 1.
  2. Press PLAY to start playback of the song.
  3. Press LEVEL/BALANCE and use the TIME/VALUE dial to adjust the song’s volume.
  4. Rotate the PHONES knob to adjust volume of headphones connected to the VSR-880.
  5. Press STOP to end playback of the song.
  6. Press ZERO to go to the beginning of the song.
  7. Press SCENE, then press one of the STATUS buttons, (2-5), to listen to one of the other versions of the demo song.
Changing Virtual Tracks in a Song

The demo song "Spiderweb" has 3 different guitar solos, each recorded on Virtual Tracks 2,3 and 6, on Track 7. Use the following procedure to listen to each of the different solos found on Track 7:

  1. Hold SHIFT and press EXT SYNC/TR MIX.
  2. Use the PARAMETER buttons to select "V.Track=."
  3. Hold SHIFT and press the STATUS [7] button.
  4. Use the TIME/VALUE dial to select "TR7 V.Track= A:2."
  5. Press PLAY/DISPLAY to exit.
  6. Press ZERO, then PLAY to hear the guitar solo.
  7. Repeat steps 1-6 to audition the other solos.
Adding Effects to a Song

With a VS8F-2 Effects Board installed, two stereo effects processors are added to the VSR-880. Use the following steps to audition effects on the different guitar solos found on Track 7 of "Spiderweb:"

  1. Load Scene 3 and select Track 7, V-Track 2 as previously described.
  2. Hold SHIFT and press LOCATOR/EFFECT1.
  3. Hold down SHIFT and press STATUS [7].
  4. Use the PARAMETER buttons to select "TR7 FX1 Ins.=OFF." Use the TIME/VALUE dial to select "Insert."
  5. Hold SHIFT and press EXIT/NO.
  6. Use the PARAMETER buttons to select "FX? EFFECT-1 PRM ?" Press ENT/YES.
  7. Use the TIME/VALUE dial to select "A58=GA:JMP-STACK" and press ENT/YES.
  8. Press PLAY to hear Track 7 with the effect.
Connecting the VSR—880 to a VM—3100Pro

Combining the VSR-880 with the VM-3100Pro provides a complete 24-bit recording system. Use the following procedure to connect the VSR-880 to a VM-3100Pro using R-Bus:

  1. Make sure that both the VSR-880 and the VM-3100Pro are turned off. Lower the volume of your monitor speakers connected to the VM-3100Pro.
  2. Connect the VSR-880 to the VM-3100Pro’s R-Bus connection.
  3. Turn on the VSR-880 and let it fully boot up.
  4. Power on the VM-3100Pro.

Set the following parameters on the VM-3100Pro:

NOTE: Your VM-3100Pro needs to be at Version 1.03 for this example. If your VM-3100Pro is not at version 1.03, please contact Roland Product Support (323-890-3742) for assistance in updating your mixer.

  1. Press SYSTEM.
  2. Use the TIME/VALUE dial to set "MasterClk" to INTERNAL.
  3. Page down to "LocatorType" and set to TIMECODE.
  4. Page down to "RecorderType" and set to HD.
  5. Press the F1-F4 ON/OFF button.
  6. Press F2 [MIDI].
  7. Page down to "TimingMon" and set to TIMECODE.
  8. Page down to "Transport" and set to RECORDER.

Set the following parameters in the VSR-880:

  1. Hold SHIFT and press SYSTEM repeatedly until "SYS SYSTEM PRM" appears in the display.
  2. Press ENT/YES.
  3. Use the TIME/VALUE dial to set "MasterClk" to R-BUS.
  4. Press ENT/YES to confirm.
  5. Hold SHIFT and press SYSTEM repeatedly until "SYS MIDI PRM" appears in the display.
  6. Press ENT/YES.
  7. Use the RIGHT PARAMETER button to move to "MID:MMC."
  8. Use the TIME/VALUE dial to select Off/RBUS.
  9. Press the LEVEL/BALANCE button.
  10. Use the RIGHT PARAMETER key to move to "MST Direct Out."
  11. Use the TIME/VALUE dial to select ON.
  12. Press PLAY [DISPLAY].
Playing a VSR—880 Song From the VM—3100Pro

The VSR-880 can be operated directly from the VM-3100Pro. Use the following procedure to load and play the VSR-880 demo song "Tender" from the VM-3100Pro.

On the VM-3100Pro:

  1. Press F1-F4 ON/OFF.
  2. Press F3 [MTR].
  3. Press F1-F4 ON/OFF.
  4. Press F4 [SONG].
  5. Use the TIME/VALUE dial to select "TENDER."
  6. Press ENTER/YES twice.
  7. At the prompt "STORE Current?" press EXIT/NO. The VSR-880 will load "Tender."
  8. Press LEVEL METER to exit.
  9. Press AUDIO CH until it is lit green.
  10. Press PLAY to start playback of the song.
  11. Raise the red Master fader and adjust faders 13-20 to mix the input from the VSR-880 tracks.
  12. Press the STOP button to end playback.

Note: The AUDIO CH indicator should be lit green to control the level of the VSR-880 channels and red to control channels 1-12.

Connecting the VSR—880 to a VM—7000 Mixer

The VSR-880 is a powerful addition to a VM-7000 Mixing System. Up to six VSR-880’s can be operated remotely from a fully expanded VM-7000 system offering 48 tracks of 24-bit digital recording. Use the following procedure to digitally connect the VSR-880 to a VM-7000 Mixer using R-Bus:

NOTE: A VM-24E I/O card must be installed in the VM-7200/7200 processor to connect to the VSR-880.

  1. With power off to all devices, connect the VSR-880 to the R-Bus connection labeled "1-8" on the VM-7200/7100 VM-24E I/O card.
  2. Turn on the VSR-880 and let it fully boot up.
  3. Power on the VM-7200/7100 processor. Wait for the processor’s status lamp to turn green. Turn on the VM-C7200/7100 console.

Set the following parameters in the VM-7000 System:

  1. Hold SHIFT and press PROJECT/SYSTEM.
  2. Use the DOWN CURSOR to select the second row of the SYSTEM MENU.
  3. Press F1 [DIGITAL I/O].
  4. Use the UP or DOWN CURSOR to move to "WORD CLOCK SOURCE."
  5. Use the V1 Knob to select "INTERNAL." Press F1 [SET] to confirm.
  6. Use the DOWN CURSOR to move to "INTERNAL SAMPLING RATE".
  7. Use the V1 Knob to select "44.1kHz". Press F1 [SET] to confirm.
  8. Press the PAGE UP button to move back to the SYSTEM MENU.
  9. Press F3 [SYNC CLOCK].
  10. Use the UP CURSOR to select "SYNC MASTER."
  11. Use the V1 Knob to select "INT." Press F1 [SET] to confirm.
  12. Use the DOWN CURSOR to move to "MMC MASTER."
  13. Use the V2 Knob to select "INT." Press F2 [SET] to confirm.
  14. Use the V5 Knob to select "MACHINE TYPE" as "HD." Press F5 [SET] to confirm.
  15. Press LEVEL METER to exit back to the main Level Meter display.

Set the following parameters in the VSR-880:

  1. Hold SHIFT and press SYSTEM repeatedly until "SYS SYSTEM PRM" appears in the display.
  2. Press ENT/YES.
  3. Use the TIME/VALUE dial to set "MasterClk" to R-BUS.
  4. Press ENT/YES to confirm.
  5. Hold SHIFT and press SYSTEM repeatedly until "SYS MIDI PRM" appears in the display.
  6. Press ENT/YES.
  7. Use the RIGHT PARAMETER button to move to "MID:MMC."
  8. Use the TIME/VALUE dial to select Off/RBUS.
  9. Press the LEVEL/BALANCE button.
  10. Use the RIGHT PARAMETER key to move to "MST Direct Out."
  11. Use the TIME/VALUE dial to select ON.
  12. Press PLAY [DISPLAY].
Playing a VSR—880 Song From the VM—7000

Use the following procedure to load and play the demo song "Tender" from the VM-7000 Mixer:

  1. Hold SHIFT and press PROJECT/SYSTEM.
  2. Use the UP CURSOR to select the first row of the SYSTEM MENU.
  3. Press F1 [SYSTEM CONFIG].
  4. Use the PAGE DOWN button to select "R-BUS-1."
  5. Use the V1 Knob to select the song "Tender."
  6. Press F1 [SELECT].
  7. At "STORE CURRENT SONG," press F5 [NO]. The VSR-880 will load the song "Tender."
  8. Press LEVEL METER to exit.

    Note: At this point, you should make sure that the VSR-880 is still set correctly to be controlled by the VM-7000 (see the above section).

  9. Press MULTI IN/CH1-24 in the SECTION area.
  10. Press PLAY in the TRANSPORT section.
  11. Raise the Master Fader to hear the input from the VSR-880.
  12. Adjust faders 1-8 to mix the VSR-880 tracks.
  13. Press the STOP button on the console to end playback of the demo song.
  14. Press the ZERO button to fast rewind to the beginning of the song.
