MIDIGraphy Operating Instructions

MIDIGraphy is a Macintosh shareware program that can be used for updating Roland products that utilize Standard MIDI FIles (SMF). This application is only available for Macintosh computers. You will need a MIDI interface connected to your computer to use this program.

Installing Instructions
Use the following procedure to install this application:

  1. Insert the SX-31 disk into your computer.
  2. Copy the file "Midigraphy" to your hard drive.
  3. Double click the "Midigraphy" icon.
  4. Select the destination for the application files, and click on Extract.
Tip: You may want to create a Folder on your Macintosh for MIDIGraphy as it will copy several folders and files to your hard drive.

Note: MIDIGraphy takes approximately 2.6 MB of disk space when installed.

Operating Instructions

  1. Double click on the MIDIGraphy icon to launch the application (see Fig.1).
  2. The first time you launch MIDIGraphy, a selection box will appear prompting you to choose the desired MIDI port to send your data.
  3. Click on File>Open and use the dialog box to load the first SMF.
  4. If you wish to view the System Exclusive messages, click on Window>Event List (see Fig.2).
  5. At this point, you should set up the Roland device to receive the system update.
  6. Click on MIDI>Play>all to start playback. MIDIGraphy will automatically stop at the end of each SMF.
  7. Load the next SMF and start playback until all of the MIDI Files have been played.
  8. Complete the update on the Roland device (if applicable), and select File>Quit to exit MIDIGraphy.

Troubleshooting Information

If you have problems installing this program, you can order a new disk directly from Roland. Please call Customer Service at 323-890-3700 ext. 2289 and request part number SX-31. You can also download this file from the "Miscellaneous Downloads" section of our Website (www.rolandus.com).

If you have problems updating your unit from the computer, the first place to look is your MIDI Interface setup. A MIDI Interface is used to connect MIDI devices to your computer. On the Macintosh, MIDI interfaces are usually connected to the printer, modem, or USB port(s). The interface is then controlled by either the sequencing software itself or by one of three programs: Apple MIDI Manager, OMS (Opcode), or FreeMIDI (Mark of the Unicorn). If you are having trouble getting your MIDI Interface to work properly, there are a number of common troubleshooting techniques you can use to determine where the problem lies. Most setup problems are the result of conflicting extensions in your system folder. Try disabling any extensions that are not absolutely necessary for the program to run and restart your computer.

Defective or incorrectly connected MIDI cables are another common problem encountered when configuring a computer / MIDI sequencing setup.

Note: MIDIGraphy is a shareware program. Shareware allows you to try an application for free. If you decide to keep and use it, you pay a small fee to the author of the software.

Roland does not manufacture or warrant this program. If you wish to purchase this application or ask questions about it, please email the manufacturer at tontata@kagi.com.
