Recording User Styles on the G-1000
SN94 v1.0, October 15th, 1998

The G-1000 Arranger Workstation is the flagship of the Roland arranger products. It incorporates an extensive range of Preset Styles and sounds that can be used to create music. The G-1000 also allows you to create your own custom accompaniments, known as User Styles. This document covers the steps necessary to create a User Style. It is a supplement to the Owner's Manual for the G-1000. In order to take full advantage of the G-1000, be sure to read the Owner's Manual.

There are three ways to create a User Style. One method is to create an original User Style. Another is to edit an existing Style. This requires that you copy some or all elements from a Preset Style to a User Style and then alter that Style to suit your particular needs. The third method is to create a User Style based on a Standard MIDI File.

Topics
We will cover the following topics in this document:

  1. Organization of Styles in the G-1000.
  2. Setting up the G-1000 for recording a User Style. III. Adjusting the sound and effects for a User Style.
  3. Recording a User Style on the G-1000.
  4. Modifying an existing Preset Style.
  5. Converting a Standard MIDI File to a User Style.
  6. Saving a User Style to disk.
I. Organization of Styles on the G-1000
A G-1000 Style is a collection of short musical segments that can be selected in realtime. Some of these segments are selectable from the front panel of the G-1000 such as: Intro, Ending, Basic, Advanced, Original, Variation and Fill In. Other segments are selected automatically depending on which chords you play on the keyboard - major, minor, or seventh. See figure 1 for a chart of how these segments are organized.

Glossary of Terms and Abbreviations Used in this Document
Tracks - The G-1000 has two kinds of tracks: sequencer tracks in the Song Tools section and Style tracks in the arranger section. A sequencer track is similar to a track on a multi-track recorder. Just as you can record any instrument on a tape recorder track, you can record any instrument on a sequencer track. The G-1000 sets up tracks 1-16 to correspond to MIDI channels 1-16. Style tracks are different from sequencer tracks in two ways. First, there are only eight tracks in a Style. Second, these Style tracks are assigned to specific instruments: 1 = drums, 2 = bass, 3 through 8 = melodic parts.

Types and Divisions - Each G-1000 Style contains many elements. These elements are organized within each Style by Style Types and Style Divisions. There are two Style Types - Basic and Advanced. Each Style Type contains Style Divisions. Style Types and Divisions can be selected by pressing buttons on the front panel of the G-1000.

A Basic Type is the simplest arrangement of the Style. It has the least amount of musical complexity. An Advanced Type typically adds more tracks and more complexity to the Basic Type. On the G-1000, under ARRANGER, press TYPE to choose between BASIC or ADVANCED Type.

Original Divisions have less complexity than Variation Divisions. Under ARRANGER, press DIVISION to choose between ORIGINAL or VARIATION divisions.

Additional Divisions include Fill to Original, Fill to Variation, Intro and Ending. Press TO ORIGINAL to select a musical transition from the presently selected Division to the Original Division. Press TO VARIATION to select a musical transition from the presently selected Division to the Variation Division. Press INTRO to select an introductory phrase used as the beginning of a song. Press ENDING to select an ending phrase to bring the song to an end.

Modes - Within each Type and Division there are three Modes: Major, Minor and Seventh. These Modes can be selected by playing major, minor or seventh chords while a Style is playing.

There are many abbreviations used in the G-1000 display. Please refer to figure 2 for a quick guide.

Tip: A different pattern can be recorded for each chord type played on the keyboard (major, minor, seventh). If your accompaniment does not require specific changes in the pattern for each chord type, you only need to record the major version of the part and set the Mode to "M=m=7." If the Type is set to "B=A," the pattern will be the same for the Basic and the Advanced type.

Determining the Length of a Pattern
Every pattern of each division must have a specified length which should be set up before recording begins.
Select - Selects the pattern whose length you wish to set.

  5. If you wish to record another instrument, use the Drum/Part knob to select the desired track and repeat steps 1-5.

External MIDI Recording
You can record from an external MIDI controller, drum machine, or sequencer in a similar manner. Select a track in the G-1000, match the MIDI channel for the part you wish to record to your MIDI instrument, and follow the steps in the previous section to record your performance. Normally, the MIDI channels in the G-1000 are set as follows:

MIDI Channel G-1000 Part
1Accompaniment 1
2A. Bass
3Accompaniment 2
5Accompaniment 3
7Accompaniment 4
8Accompaniment 5
9Accompaniment 6

If you are using an external sequencer or drum machine, use the following procedure to enable the G-1000 to sync to external MIDI clock:

  1. From the MASTER page, press F3 [Midi].
  2. Hold SHIFT and press F4 [Sync].
  3. Use the PAGE Up/Down buttons to select the "RX" page.
  4. Use the ACCOMP GROUP knob to set "Style" to "Midi." Remember to change this setting back to "Auto" when you are done recording from the external MIDI device.
  5. Press F5 [Exit].

Note: Be aware that when the Style ends, the G-1000 will loop to the beginning and continue recording. You should not leave your drum machine or sequencer running through more than one repetition as this will result in double notes or other material being recorded on top of the original data.

Erasing a Track
Any track within a Style can be erased. Use the following procedure to erase a track:

  1. Press F4 [UsrSt], then F4 [Edit], then F1 [Erase].
  2. Use the PAGE ‹ /D buttons to select page #1.

  4. Press PAGE ‹ to select page #2.
  5. Use the corresponding knobs to set the To/From, Bar, Beat, CPT, and Data Type parameters.

Note: The "From" and "To" parameters represent the beginning and ending points for the section to be erased and are designated in bars, beats, and clock pulses (CPT). The "Data Type" parameter allows you to select specific types of MIDI data to be erased (Notes, Pitch Bends, etc.). To erase all data from the specified section of the track, select "ALL."

  6. Press PAGE ‹ to select page #3.
  7. Use the corresponding knobs to set the From Note, To Note, and Octave parameters (optional).

Note: Here you can select the upper and lower limit of the notes that you wish to erase. In MIDI there is a range of 128 notes, numbered 0 through 127. Middle C is note number 60, for example. You can set both of these values to the same note to erase a specific repeated note (such as a Hi-Hat part on a drum track.)

  8. Press M Drums [Execute] to erase the selected information.
  9. Press UPPER 1[REC] button to return to the main USRSTL page.
V. Modifying a Preset Style
After you are done recording your new User Style, you must save it to disk (see section VII).

In some cases, you may wish to make changes to an existing Style in the G-1000. Use the following procedure to copy a Preset to a User Style:

  1. Press F5 [Disk].
  2. Press F1 [Load].
  3. Use the PAGE D button to select the "USR STL" page.
  4. Turn the DRUMS PART [device] knob to select the source of the User Style you wish to modify. You can choose between Int (internal Styles) and Styles contained on FDD (floppy disks) or ID5 (ZIP disks).
  5. Use the ACCOMP GROUP [select] knob to select the Style you wish to modify.
  6. Press UPPER 1 [EXECUTE] to display "LOADING . . ." followed by "OK ! ! LOAD COMPLETE."
  7. Press F5 [Exit].

You can now change the sounds on each track or modify the effects settings (see section II), use the editing tools to change parts, or re-record certain parts (see section III). After you are done modifying your new User Style, you must save it to disk (see section VII).

VI. Converting a SMF to a User Style
The G-1000 has a unique tool for creating a Music Style from a Standard MIDI File. This will allow you to excerpt favorite sections, phrases, hooks or riffs from a Standard MIDI File and use them to create new Styles. Let's begin the process by playing a Standard MIDI File on the G-1000 to load the song data into sequencer memory:

  1. Simultaneously press DOWN and UP (under Performance Memory) to display "00 Free Pnl."
  2. Insert a disk containing Standard MIDI Files into the floppy disk drive or the ZIP disk drive.
  3. Press PLAY/STOP (under Recorder) to begin playback and load the song into memory.
  4. Press PLAY/STOP (under Recorder) after the song has played for a few measures.
  5. Press SONG TOOLS.
  6. Press M DRUMS [16 TRACKS SEQUENCER].
  7. Press F2 [StlCn].
  8. Press Lower 1 [RESET]. This assigns default settings of common instrument parts to respective Style tracks. If you need to change these assignments, use the DRUMS PART and UPPER VARIATION knobs to change the MIDI channels to the desired settings.

Note: Standard MIDI Files generally have instrument parts assigned to specific channels (e.g. - drum parts on channel 10 and bass parts on channel 2). These are merely conventions, since there are no iron-clad rules regarding instruments and their channel assignment. Consequently, any instrument or part could appear on any channel. The success of the "SETUP" default settings depends on how closely the source Standard MIDI File adheres to these conventions.

  9. Press PAGE ‹ to select "FROM 1" in the display.
  10. Use the DRUMS PART knob to select the song tracks you wish to include in your new style. You can convert all the tracks by turning the knob fully clockwise to select "ALL."

Note: If you are not sure which instrument is assigned to each track, use the DRUMS PART knob to select a track, then press UPPER VARIATION [SOLO-OFF] to solo that track. Press PLAY/STOP to begin playback. Repeat this procedure to audition each track individually.

  11. Use the DRUMS PART and ACCOMP GROUP knobs to select a range of song "BARS." Specify the beginning "From" and the ending "To" of the phrase or section of the Standard MIDI File that will be used for the new Style.

Note:The first measure of a Standard MIDI File is usually reserved for the song setup. The setup includes settings for tempo, instrument choices, volume, pan and effects.

  12. Press PAGE ‹ to select "TO" in the display.
  13. Use the DRUMS PART knob to indicate the key of the song section which is being converted.

Note:It is important to remember that the G-1000 factory Preset Styles are all created in the key of "C." If the Standard MIDI File song (or section of a song) is in a key other than "C," you must determine what key it is and make the appropriate settings at this time.

  14. Use the ACCOMP GROUP, BASS BANK and LOWER NUMBER knobs to indicate into which Division of the User Style you wish to load this section of the Standard MIDI File. Use the ACCOMP GROUP knob to select the "MODE" (M, m, 7). Use the BASS BANK knob to select the "TYPE" (Bsc, Adv). Finally, use the LOWER NUMBER knob to select the "DIVISION" (Or, Var, FO, FV, In, Ed).
  15. Press UPPER 1 [EXECUTE] to display "EXECUTINGŠplease Wait."

Now that you have created a new User Style you must save it to disk (see section VII.)

VII. Saving a User Style to disk.
Use the following procedure to save a User Style to disk:

  1. Insert a formatted 3.5 inch floppy disk into the disk drive or a formatted ZIP disk into the ZIP drive.
  2. From the "MASTER" page, Press F5 [Disk].
  3. Press M DRUMS [Device].
  4. Use the BASS BANK knob to select the floppy disk "FDD" or the ZIP disk "HD mounted" to which you will save your new User Style.
  5. Press UPPER 1 [CHANGE] to display "EXECUTING . . . please Wait."
  6. Press F4 [Disk].
  7. Press F2 [Save].
  8. Use the PAGE D button to select the "USR STL" page.
  9. Use the LOWER NUMBER and UPPER VARIATION knobs to name your User Style. The LOWER NUMBER knob moves the cursor left to right, the UPPER VARIATION knob scrolls through the alphabet and number characters.
  10. Press M.BASS [EXECUTE] to confirm your settings and save the data to disk.

You have now successfully created a User Style. This new Style will complement the family of Preset Styles provided with your G-1000. It can be used in the creation of new arrangements or songs. As you can see, the powerful arranger functions of the G-1000 can be used in a variety of ways to suit your style and preferences. Don't be afraid to experiment and, above all, have fun!
